Baktığını Taşa Çeviren Yılan Saçlı Kadın Medusa

Saçları yılanlardan oluşan, bakışları dokunduğu her şeyi taşa çeviren, Yunan mitolojisinde yer alan en ürkütücü figürlerinden birisidir o. Adı Medusa.

Medusa Gorgon kardeşlerden tek ölümlü olandır. Diğer iki kız kardeşi ölümsüzdür.

Ölümlü olduğu için de Perseus tarafından öldürülmüştür. Medusa, doğrudan baktığı herkesi taşa çevirme yeteneğine sahip olduğu için Perseus Medusa’yı öldürebilmek için bir ayna vasıtasıyla onun yüzüne bakabilmiştir. 

Kimi kaynaklara göre Perseus, Medusa’nın canını Hermes’in verdiği orakla almıştır. Bazı kaynaklar ise Medusa’nın canının Athena’nın verdiği ayna yahut kalkanla alındığını söyler.

Yılan saçlı Medusa’nın kafası kesilince denize iki damla kan sıçrar. Bu damlalardan birinden Chrisaor, diğerinden Pegasus doğar. Deniz tanrısı Poseidon ikisinin de babasıdır.

Bir başka efsaneye göre Medusa’nın kafasını kesen Perseus, onu, baktığı her şeyi taşa çeviren özelliğinden ötürü kendi silahı olarak kullanmıştır.

Bir gün annesinin zor durumda olduğunu gören Perseus, annesinden gözlerini kapatmasını ister ve Medusa’nın kafasını havaya kaldırarak gözlerine bakanı taşa dönüştürmesini sağlar.

Perseus, Medusa’nın kesik başını Athena’ya verir. Athena’nın kalkanındaki kesik baş Medusa’nın başıdır. 

Bir başka rivayete göre de Medusa çok güzel bir kızdır. Ancak Medusa çok güzel olduğu için Medusa’nın saçlarındaki yılanlar Athena’nın laneti ile oluşmuştur.

Poseidon, altın sarısı saçları ile görenleri hayran bırakacak kadar güzel bir kız olan Medusa’dan çok etkilenir. Bunu kıskanan Athena Medusa’nın sarı saçlarını yılanlara dönüştürür ve ona bakanı taşa çevirmesi için Medusa’yı lanetler.

Medusa’nın gözlerine bakanı taşa çevirdiğine inanılan laneti antik çağda inşa edilen çoğu yapıda Medusa başının koruyucu figür olarak kullanılmasına neden olmuştur.

Bu Medusa mozaik ve kabartmalarından günümüze kadar ulaşan pek çok örnek vardır.

Türkiye’de Didim Apollon Tapınağı’nda ve İstanbul Yerebatan Sarnıcı’nda Medusa kabartmalarını görmek mümkündür.

Yunan mitolojisinde kanatlı at olarak bilinen Pegasus’un hikayesi de en az görüntüsü kadar ilginç. Mitolojinin karışık ve masalsı dünyasında kendine has özel bir yeri olan Pegasus, Yunan mitolojisindeki deniz tanrısı Poseidon ile yılan saçlı Gorgon Medusa’nın oğludur.

Perseus tarafından başı kesilerek öldürülen Medusa’nın gövdesinden doğduğu anlatılır.

Zamanında güzeller güzeli bir Lybian prensesi olan Gorgon Medusa, Athena tapınağında deniz tanrısı Poseidon tarafından baştan çıkarılır. Bunun cezasını Tanrıça Athena tarafından bir canavara dönüştürülmekle öder.
